Often I'm not really a fan of zoos, it can be sad to see things in glass cages. All zoos tend to be the same, no matter where you are in the world. But Singapore zoo was different. Big open spaces, large enclosures mimicking natural habitats, and animals that genuinely looked happy and healthy. No pacing back and forth, no signs of boredom or stress, just normal animal behaviours.
The place was like a labyrinth, it was huge, and you could easily loose yourself four hours among the different landscapes: reptopia, wild Africa, ancient Asia and the monkey kingdom. Many of the animals here were allowed to roam totally free, so when walking around the park it was easy to see tiny spider monkeys in the trees above you, or bats nesting in the crooks of thatched rooftops.
Interactive, immersive and inspiring, Singapore zoo really encouraged people to get involved with the welfare of the planet and its inhabitants, with signs warning against the dangers of plastic and asking people to use refillable bottles and reusable bags, and plaques all over about the endangered species in the zoo and how we can get involved to stop them from going extinct in the wild.
