The Gardens by the Bay were the main reason we came to Singapore. Having seen these incredible man made structures in the shape of trees on Planet Earth, we had to come and experience them ourselves. And they were exactly what we had hoped for. These beautiful buildings represent the perfect balance and harmony that can be found when humans learn to co-exist with nature. They are monumental feat of design and engineering, and the whole area by the marina was devoted to making sure we understand our impact on the planet. I wish all cities cared about the environment as much as Singapore.
Inside the cloud Forrest, there were videos showing how humans have taken over more than our fair share of the resources, and how we we need to make changes to allow nature to re-grow. And that doesn't mean we have to give up things, it just means we need to give them back when we have used them, like recyclable plastics, and learn to let nature be a part of everything we do rather than pushing it aside.
At night, there was an incredible light and sound show which depicted the story of us, and how we can all make small changes to have a big impact on a world that needs our help. The lights illuminated the dark through incredible fibre-optics running through the branches of each sky-tree, speaking of danger in fire-red, of the love and care in lilac shades of warmth as seeds were replanted, and finally of a little brown glimmer that started at the base of each trunk and grew upwards, forking out across the trees in shades of leaf green and daffodil yellow as the trees re grew under our protection.
For those of you who know me well, you will know that I dream of being a writer one day. Words have power, they can inspire people to make a difference. So I'm going to leave some words here from one of my favourite writers, Dr Zeuss:
'Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing's ever going to change, it's not'
