Osaka City reminds me a little of Boston, with its tall glass buildings that reflect the sun in all directions. But there are so many things here that are world’s apart from the other places I have been. The food here is exceptional, and we started out the morning by trying Nikuman (floured pork buns) and Tsune (chicken balls on a stick… Sounds much cooler in Japanese).
Our meander through the city streets led us to the shopping district, which was bright and colourful and packed with all manner of things. A supermarket, with neon flashing lights and cartoon characters all over the walls, a deathly silent room with rows of the elderly musing over their games of Go and Marjong.
And to end the evening, we ate an amazing yakisoba at a little stall around the corner from us, where the people were friendly and funny, and there was much confusion over the translation of the word ‘tips’. The streets were lit up by lanterns on the way past, and we came back to crash on the futons which we rolled out onto the tatami floor and tucked up for the night.
