Ok, so we have finally ticked off the second major reason that people come to Korea: k-pop. Now at the start of the day, this isn't at all how I expected the evening to end up. We hopped on the train back to that beautiful Buddhist temple we visited just a few days ago, for they were hosting a free event for all foreigners who had chosen to come to Korea. The events included a traditional Korean orchestra, a dance accompanied by the sound of drums, and a lantern to be held in the famous lotus festival through the streets of Seoul.
Due to the rain (and when I say rain I mean torrential downpour) the lotus festival was cancelled, as the paper lanterns were no match for our adverse weather system. However, the night was still amazing as we listen to the beautiful symphony of gayageum, gamin and haegeum. And when the singer came on to accompany the orchestra, I was in for a shock. She was dressed in a beautiful traditional handbook, she was petite and slim and had an angelic face, so I was expecting a soft melody and a sweet voice. But when she started singing, the deepest, loudest, most angry sounding voice came out and nearly knocked me out of my seat.
But after the interval, the real fun started. We were joined by a Korean boy band, and they were a lot of fun. In the unusual but exciting Korean way, they slid, bounced, weaved and bopped all over the stage, singing some original songs, as well as western mash ups of Justin bieber mixed with Korean lyrics. EXP EDITION made up for the sky crying outside, and turned what could have been a disappointing evening into memorable experience here in the capital.
